Home Remedies for Cough and Cold in Babies.

Home Remedies for cough and cold in babies.

This season we see a lot of babies suffering from cough and cold. Before using any medication most parents would like to check if any of the home remedies work for their babies to get rid of cough and cold.

I still remember how I felt when my son suffered from cold for the very first time. He used to cry even during feeds. It is really tough for parents to see their babies suffer and cry. It is when I have decided to find out the home remedies for cough and cold and here is the list.

  1. Breast Milk (first 6 months):

Breast Milk is the best remedy for most infections in babies. As it works wonders, you need not worry about your babies less than 6 months of age. No medication is required if you are exclusively breastfeeding your baby for the first 6 months.

The best part of Breast Milk is that you get it for free and this super drink helps your baby fight different types of bacteria and virus.

  1. Saline Nasal Drops (from birth):

Nasal Drops helps really well. This is not just my suggestion but also most of my friends use this. This helps in clearing nose and gives relief to babies. After you put the drops inside your baby’s nose make sure the drops don’t flow out. To be frank even I use these drops and it works for me.

  1. Maintaining Hygiene (from birth):

It is important to maintain hygiene at home. When the atmosphere around the baby is clean and clear, baby is less prone to diseases. Apart from this keep your hands and your baby’s hands neat. You can use a good sanitizer regularly to keep your baby away from germs.

  1. Steam (from birth):

My paediatrician suggested giving steam to my baby when he had cold. You have to boil water and add turmeric to it. While giving steam you need to take precautions (see to it that your baby doesn’t touch the hot container). Cover yourself and baby with a towel with your faces over the container. See to it that the steam doesn’t got out and your baby gets the steam. This gives baby relief from cold.

  1. Baby’s head position (after 6 months):

When your baby is suffering from cold, keep your baby’s head in elevated position when sleeping. This helps in easy and comfortable breathing in babies.

  1. Warm Soups (after 6 months):

Feeding babies and toddlers warm soups when they have cough or cold gives them relief. You can start giving soups from 7th month onwards. They generally say that chicken soup gives relief from cold, congestion, pain and fever. You can feed clear vegetables soup also. Any warm liquid or soup gives babies good relief.

  1. Vicks vapour rub (after 6 months):

You need to apply/rub vicks on the baby’s soles and cover with socks. It is said to be giving relief to babies from cough and cold.

  1. Turmeric Paste (after 6months):

Mix warm water to Turmeric and apply the paste on the chest of your baby. This helps in absorbing phlegm and relives baby from cough and cold.

  1. Honey (1 year and above):

Did you ever see the vicks(honey as main ingredient) ad for cough? It works the same for babies also.

Method 1:

Give them honey mixed in hot water (let it cool before giving to babies) in the night before going to sleep. This worked for my son.

Method 2:

Add chopped ginger to water and boil it. Strain this water into another container and let it cool. Add one table spoon of honey to a glass of boiled ginger water and give it to them. This works wonders for cough.

  1. Giving nasal drop since birth ! Are we not making our baby prone to such medications..it might be an addiction later..i really need to know ..

    1. Hi Shubra,

We get two types of Nasal Drops. Saline Nasal drops are absolutely fine. It is just salt water and helps in cleaning nose, whereas the other type is kind of medication. If baby is suffering too much then doctors may advice that.
