How long should I Breastfeed my baby.

This is one of the most frequently asked questions by most new moms, including me. I knew breastfeeding is good and beneficial for both mom and baby, but I was not sure as to how long it has to be done. So, I have gone through a few books, read some related articles online and verified with my doctor. This is what they say.

If a mom loves breastfeeding her baby and is happy doing it, then she can do it till the baby turns one. As a matter of fact, if both the mom and the baby enjoy it, then she can continue breastfeeding for two years also. Those mothers who can’t make it so long, must breastfeed their babies for at least 6 months. Even WHO and UNICEF recommend exclusive breastfeeding for 6 months after birth. After 6 months you can introduce solids to your baby and slowly reduce the frequency of breastfeeding.

These days Breastfeeding for 6 months may also be high time for a few moms who work. Those mothers need not worry about it. You can express breast milk into a bottle and store it in a refrigerator (that works continuously) for 24 hours and feed your baby when required. This solves your problem most of the time. If this is also not possible, then breastfeeding for a minimum of 3 months is mandatory. So, as per the mother’s convenience she can breastfeed her baby from at least three months to two years.
